Black Friday and the NBA Jersey Curse

Dust off your elbow pads and lace up those steel-toed boots, because it’s Black Friday!

Or, if you’re not into public displays of grabbing that last Xbox before the old lady next to you does, then make sure your clicker-finger is limber and shop online 😉

My wife is a die-hard (more on the “die” side than the “hard” side, especially THIS season) Cleveland Cavaliers fan, so last Black Friday I bought her a wine-and-gold Isaiah Thomas jersey at a large discount.

Unfortunately, Thomas got traded to the Lakers later that season.

I had forgotten my NBA jersey curse; any time I buy an NBA player’s jersey or jersey shirt, the player changes teams soon afterwards.

Thomas is just the most recent example in a long line:

2009- I bought a Nate Robinson New York Knicks jersey while I was in The Bronx for a mission trip. The following season, he was playing with the Celtics.

2009- (again) I bought a Richard Jefferson New Jersey Nets jersey from a Goodwill while I was visiting my ex-girlfriend in New Jersey. The next season, Jefferson was playing with the San Antonio Spurs.

2010- I bought a Danilo Gallinari t-shirt New York Knicks jersey while I was in The Bronx for ANOTHER mission trip. The next season, he was playing with the Denver Nuggets.

2010- (*sigh*) I bought my brother a LeBron James Cavaliers t-shirt jersey for his birthday. A couple weeks later, James decided to take his talents to South Beach to play with the Miami Heat (“The Decision”).

2016- I ordered an old Chris Paul New Orleans Hornets jersey for Halloween (I also bought a C-3PO mask and dressed up as “C-P3O”). The next season, he left the LA Clippers and joined the Houston Rockets. HE WASN’T EVEN PLAYING FOR THE HORNETS AND HE STILL CHANGED TEAMS!

You know the definition of insanity: trying the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.

Shit, maybe I’ll order a LeBron James LA Lakers jersey today and he’ll end up back in Cleveland?

Now I just need the money to try it.
